The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to easing human suffering around the globe. UMCOR provides humanitarian relief and disaster response in the United States and internationally. Efforts are targeted in places where natural disasters, war, or conflict have done so much damage that communities are unable to recover on their own. While UMCOR is not a first-response organization, they stand ready to accompany communities in need over the long haul of their recovery, until they are well on their way to establishing a “new normal” after a crisis. In addition, UMCOR helps communities in the United States and abroad prepare for emergencies and to reduce the risk of disasters through many training programs. Can UMCOR guarantee that oppressive governments don’t misuse our donations? UMCOR works in three ways to prevent this. First, UMCOR collaborates with longstanding partners to provide many avenues of relief. In addition, we always make sure we have a legitimate consignee when sending material resources. And, when a project is large enough, we employ our own staff and supervise the project directly.
