Rhoda Kershaw is one of the lucky women that was able to find hope and healing with the help of Women At Risk. Here is her story. “Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to sing. After much local success, I thought I had caught my big break when a talent agent promised a vocal tour in Japan. My first visit to the country proved successful, on my second trip, traffickers took my papers and forced me to serve drinks at a bar. One night a co-worker lured me to a dance club filled with the Japanese mafia. After drugging and abducting me, mafia members repeatedly brutalized and raped me for three days. Eventually I escaped, but the Japanese police blamed me and a counselor even advised suicide as the only way out to preserve my dignity. Even after returning home to America, help was nowhere to be found. Finally, I discovered a community of healing and support at WAR, Int’l. Now I am no longer numb with pain. Instead, I have transformed my suffering into a story of survival and hope. Today I am able to use my passionate voice to share my story by singing at benefit concerts and speaking out against human trafficking, and whispering words of hope and encouragement to vulnerable teens and wounded women.”

At this moment in time, all around the world, a war rages against women and children. It is through the funds raised through events like this, the work will continued. Make plans to attend the open house and shop the many beautiful items that will be available. Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int’l) is a Grand Rapids-based, nonprofit organization, established to create circles of protection around at-risk women and children. Through culturally sensitive, value-added intervention projects and partnerships, we provide safe places to heal from abuse, trafficking, exploitation, and more. Our passion is to empower survivors to live and work with dignity and hope.

WAR, Int’l enables the creation of safe places for women and children and also gives a voice to their silenced cries. By educating communities about risk issues and providing individuals with practical ways to take action, we extend our reach through you.

Our programs and partnerships span the globe, reaching over 40 countries, including the United States. Each month, additional projects and partnerships are formed, increasing our ability to offer the rescued and at-risk a “hand-up” instead of a handout.
